PLAIN clothes police officers are pinging drivers across Perth as part of a new operation targeting inattention behind the wheel.
The never-before used police tactic, in full swing this morning, involves plain clothes officers "spotting" for offences at various intersections.
Is it fair for plain clothes police to dob drivers in?
If they spot an offence, such as a driver using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt, uniformed police will be "radioed" in to pull that motorist over and issue an infringement.

Inspector Ian Clarke said more than a dozen drivers were caught this morning using phones and not wearing seatbelts in the first hour of the operation in the Perth Hills.
Insp-Clarke said driver inattention was a direct cause in 55 WA road fatalities between 2010 and 2013.
"This is just another tactic that is in our toolbox and we will continue to roll out different ones all the time," Insp-Clarke said.
Plain clothes police would observe drivers offending and alert a uniformed officer, who issued a fine.
"Doing this sort of targeting… is focused wholly and solely on saving people's lives and stopping people maiming others.
"It's such a selfish thing to do (not paying attention) because the risk to injuring other people is very high."
Insp-Clarke said driver inattention was a major cause of rear end crashes, which very often had a devastating impact on people's lives.

"Inattention is the biggest cause of rear enders…they largely affect a lot of people with back and neck injuries," he said.
"It's a huge toll on families and the working community.
"It is so debilitating."

Today's operation focused on the Perth Hills and the southern suburbs.
Insp-Clarke said identical operations to the one today will be carried out in the near future.
