THE Western Bulldogs say Good Friday football would prove an asset to the AFL and they would work with all the stakeholders should they win the coveted timeslot.

The AFL Commission approved the fixture on Monday but cautioned it was up to the AFL Executive to determine whether to play on the religious holiday next year.

"The AFL has the right to choose who they want for the fixture, but we would be willing to work with all the stakeholders to make it work," Dogs chief executive Simon Garlick told the Herald Sun.

The search for the first ever Good Friday match-up would almost certainly exclude powerhouses Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond and Carlton if the fixture was included next season.

Round 1 of 2015 falls on Easter with the Blues and Tigers expected to reignite their season-opener at the MCG on the Thursday night, one week after the cricket world cup concludes.

The Cats and Hawks are locked in for their annual Easter Monday blockbuster, while North Melbourne remains confident of winning Good Friday football after first lobbying for a match more than 20 years ago.

Collingwood and Essendon are also expected to be excluded due to their bevy of existing blockbusters.

The Roos' preferred opponent is Carlton but the league yesterday said Gold Coast and Sydney were also in the mix to host historic games.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan yesterday said team's performances would be a factor, pointing to the Dogs' thrilling win against Collingwood.

The Blues last night said if they missed out it would allow them to resume their Round 1 clash against the Tigers.

"While our hat is still in the ring, we understand there are many clubs interested (in Good Friday)," an official said.
