‘High likelihood’ object is MH370

The Malaysia Transport Minister says the China ambassador has received satellite photos of an object in the Southern Corridor.

AVIATION expert Neil Hansford believes there is a "high likelihood" the new satellite images are of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The Chinese Government has released a satellite image of debris from March 18, two days after commercial satellites captured what appeared to be a 24m piece of debris, hopefully of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which went missing on March 8.

The new image is 120km southwest of the first sighting.

Strategic Aviation Solutions chairman Neil Hansford said this new image could be a piece of the fuselage.

'It says to me that there's a high likelihood of it being from an aircraft,' he said.

Mr Hansford said the new find appeared to back up Australia's efforts to focus the search at the location of the previous sighting, 2300km south west of Perth.

'If that was taken later than the first images, it suggests it validates what they saw.'

A Boeing 777-200ER has a wingspan on 60.9m and overall length of 63.7m.

Mr Hansford said it might explain why China was now committing resources to the search off the Western Australian coast.

He said the Chinese may have waited until they saw something 'concrete'.

With a second possible sighting, Mr Hansford said the search area may now become clearer, making it easier for the objects to be located.

However, he cautioned that the objects could still have drifted far from where they were first spotted.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority was tonight trying to verify reports of the new satellite image.
