IT was an explosive industrial spectacular for the 30,000-strong mosh pit of families gathered beneath.

The Perth International Arts Festival kicked off with a boom, as a free fireworks-based extravangza - Bombs Per Minute - wowed onlookers at Langley Park last night.

The standing only show meant families had to roll up their picnic rugs, making the park look more like a mosh pit as the lights dimmed and the stage came to life.

Some crowd members were frustrated at being forced to stand, with children unable to see past the adults in front of them.

But frustrations were forgotten as a percussive spectacle unfolded for the next 45 minutes.

Adam Konarik (12) was at the show with his grandparents and said it didn't matter he had to stand.

"It was really cool with the fireworks," he said.

His grandfather Ted Culley (66) was amazed with what he saw.

"It makes you feel very proud (of Perth)," he said.

"The kids had a bit of trouble (seeing) but we put them on our shoulders and it was good."

Grandmother Gina Culley (66) summed it up with one word - "amazing".

Steven Richards (36) said the event was not what he was expecting but it was still fantastic.

He was particularly buzzed about the in-your-face pyrotechnics display.

"The only way you could get any closer (to fireworks) is if you let your own off," he said.

The team responsible for the sizzling display was French group Les Commandos Percu, a street arts act which fuses music with fire.

The Perth International Arts Festival runs from February 8 to March 2.
