A LONG-overdue end to Perth's summer heatwave has helped make conditions enjoyable for thousands of punters at this year's Perth Cup.
The annual event at Ascot Racecourse drew a wide variety of people, ranging from racing diehards to those simply keen to kick the new year off with a bang in a festival atmosphere.
Today's 30.8C maximum provided welcome relief for racegoers following a week of searing temperatures, including yesterday's 42.1C scorcher.

The day's main event, the 2400m Perth Cup, was all set to be a shootout between race favourites Mr Moet and Cantonese.
But instead, it was late call-up Talent Show - part-owned by AFL footballer Hayden Ballantyne - that stole the show with a barnstorming win.
There was also plenty of colour to be found away from the track, with bikini models in the day's fashion parade finding a way to keep cool.
And as always, racegoers went to great lengths to ensure their own outfits were in top shape, with big hats, kilts, and Hawaiian-themed get-up spotted at the track.
Meanwhile, at a celebration of all things Cuban in Nedland, a strong crowd turned out for the New Year's Day Cuban Club celebrations.
