NW survives 170km/h cyclone blast

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 31 Desember 2013 | 22.17

Tropical cyclone Christine is battering the Pilbara coast, forcing people to take shelter from the winds.

TROPICAL Cyclone Christine blasted the Pilbara coast with 170km/h winds and dumped more than 160mm of rain on the region last night, leaving thousands without power.

The cyclone crossed the coast about midnight, near Roebourne and Whim Creek, but the North West appears to have escaped without major destruction or loss of life.

No deaths or serious injuries have been reported.

This evening, the storm system had been downgraded to a category one and the red alert was lifted as it moved further inland and weakened.

Roebourne appears to have suffered the most damage - the WA Country Health Service has temporarily closed the Roebourne District Hospital after it suffered serious damage.

DFES reports that several other buildings in the town, suffered damage and the town's power, water and communications infrastructure have also been hit.

More than 3000 homes remain without power, mainly in the Pilbara biggest town, Karratha.

The cyclone has been downgraded to a category one system as it continues to sweep inland.

The Bureau of Meteorology estimated at 8pm that the cyclone was 195km south-west of Newman and 65km west-north-west of three rivers, and moving south-east at 32km/h.

Residents awoke this morning telling of a furious night, with Cyclone Christine delivering fearful winds.

At the height of the storm the Bureau of Meteorology predicted the winds at the eye of the cyclone were gusting to 220km/h, but the powerful system spared a direct hit on any of the Pilbara communities.

The system has dumped enormous rainfall across a wide area but has been downgraded to a category two system this morning as it barrels inland towards remote mining communities.

CLEAN UP BEGINS

With destruction caused by Cyclone Christine appearing to be largely limited to superficial damage to trees, fences and minor roof leaks, the big clean-up is underway.

Roebourne councillor Robin Vandenberg said many trees had fallen but there was no significant structural damage.

``The red alert has just gone off so we are getting out now to look at the damage, but looking at the area around us from the front yard, it's all just superficial damage,'' he told AAP.

Mr Vandenberg said on a scale of one to 10, he would rate the cyclone as a seven in severity.

``It's not the worst I've experienced, but it's not at the low end either,'' he said.

Mr Vandenberg has lived in his house for 30 years and said the older buildings had stood the test of time against cyclones, while some of the newer buildings had suffered leaks.

``We have a big patio at the front and back and there were some roars because of the tin but nothing came off,'' he said.

A red alert remains in place for people in or near Tom Price and Paraburdoo, where residents have been warned to stay indoors and away from doors and windows.

Relocation points have been set up at the Tom Price High School gym and Ashburton Hall in Paraburdoo.

A yellow alert is current for people in or near the inland community of Pannawonica.

A blue alert is current for people in or near the inland communities of Newman, Collier Ranges and Three Rivers.

The all-clear has been given for people between De Grey and Mardie, including Marble Bar, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Whim Creek, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson, Karratha and Dampier.

Those residents have been warned to take caution when heading outside due to fallen debris.

Damaging winds with gusts up to 120km/h are still possible near the cyclone centre and flood warnings have been issued, BoM said.

Australia's biggest iron ore miners - Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals Group - are assessing the impact of the cyclone on port, rail and mine operations, and ship loading is expected to remain suspended for some time.

A Rio Tinto spokesman said the company's coastal and West Pilbara operations remained closed.

``We are still fully assessing the impact at this stage,'' he said.

State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers have had more than 40 calls related to roof damage, broken fences, fallen trees and flooding.

Horizon Power says 3200 homes are without electricity in Roebourne, Karratha and Point Samson.

More than 25 customers are also without power in the Port Hedland area, and there are damaged transmission lines in Karratha, Roebourne and Port Hedland.

By early today the cyclone had begun to weaken and was downgraded to a Category Two storm, but is still packing destructive winds up to 130km/h at its centre.

To 9am, Roebourne had recorded 134mm, Port Hedland 123mm and Karratha 110mm.

DeGrey topped the state with 161mm in 24 hours to 9am.

By 11.30am Marble Bar had recorded nearly 130mm as the decaying cyclone dumps its load over inland mining regions.

Channel Nine News reporter Matt Tinney, who saw out the cyclone in Port Hedland, told 6PR radio this morning there were unconfirmed reports that a family had to bunker down in the bathroom of their house in Wickham, north of Roebourne, when their roof was ripped off by ferocious winds.

"It hasn't been confirmed yet because authorities can't go out there because of the red alert and the town being in lockdown," he said.

"So once they can get out there they will.

"Here in Port Hedland we're getting a first look at the damage - trees are down, the streets are flooded, the rain's coming in horizontally.

"I can only just see the port now, but about 10 minutes ago I saw the port was flooded as well."

More than 100 homes and businesses are without power in Port Hedland this morning.

Horizon Power advises Roebourne, Karratha and Point Sampson customers are also starting the day without electricity.

The supply will remain cut until the cyclone has cleared the area.

SES volunteers have had more than 56 calls related to roof damage, broken fences, fallen trees and flooding.

Volunteers will start work once it is safe to do so.

An Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Rapid Damage Assessment team is on location to help if required and incident management teams have been established to help people that may be impacted by the cyclone.

DFES is working closely with WA Police, Western Power, Main Roads, Local Government, Department of Health, Water Corporation, Department of Education, Department of Child Protection and Family Support and Telstra to minimise the impact on the community.

CYCLONE WARNING REMAINS

A Cyclone warning is current for inland parts of the Pilbara including Paraburdoo, Tom Price and Newman extending into central WA to include Three Rivers, Wiluna and Leinster.

The Cyclone warning for coastal parts of the Pilbara including Karratha has been cancelled.

DFES State Emergency Service (SES) advises of the following community alerts:

RED ALERT: People in or near Tom Price and Paraburdoo. You need to immediately head to shelter and stay indoors away from doors and windows.

YELLOW ALERT: People in inland areas surrounding and including Pannawonica. You need to take action and get ready to shelter from the cyclone.

BLUE ALERT: People in or near Newman and inland to the Collier Ranges and Three Rivers including Kumarina and east to Granite Peak and southwest to Wiluna, need to prepare for cyclonic weather and organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, spare batteries, food and water.

People needing SES assistance can call 132 500.

In a life-threatening situation call 000. For more safety tips visit www.dfes.wa.gov.au

MINING OPERATIONS CLOSE DOWN

Australia's biggest iron ore miners have stopped loading ships and suspended rail operations as cyclone Christine heads towards the Pilbara coast.

A cyclone warning has been issued for coastal areas from Bidyadanga to Onslow, including Port Hedland, Karratha and Onslow, and extending inland to Paraburdoo.

BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group have suspended their port operations in the region.

BHP said ``tie-down'' activities at Port Hedland, Australia's largest iron ore export port, have been completed.

``Extreme weather preparations continue across our mining operations in line with alerts issued by Department of Fire and Emergency Services,'' BHP said in a statement.

``Any production impacts will be in our next operational report.''

The highest priority is to ensure the safety of employees, BHP said.

Rio Tinto said ship loading had now stopped, but mine and rail operations continue to operate as normal.

Fortescue Metals Group said its Port Hedland operations and rail operations had been secured, in line with the company's cyclone readiness procedures.

``Conditions are being closely monitored and plans will be updated accordingly,'' the company said.

KARIJINI CLOSED

The Department of Parks and Wildlife advises that Karijini National Park in the Shire of Ashburton will be closed until further notice from 12pm today due to Cyclone Christine.

Gales, destructive winds and heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Christine are expected in the region today and tomorrow.

PILBARA HEALTH SERVICES

The WA Country Health Service Pilbara wishes to advise residents of Karratha, Port Hedland and surrounding districts of health service access in the lead up to and during Cyclone Christine.

During Yellow Alert, people in Karratha requiring urgent medical care can access Nickol Bay Hospital however, it is recommended that only emergency patients or those requiring urgent care come to the hospital during this time.

As is usual practice in the lead up to a cyclone, an emergency medical team will be managing patients and where possible, transferring to other hospitals that are not in the predicted path of the cyclone.

Upon Red Alert status, an Emergency Medical Response Team will be located in the Karratha Leisureplex (Cyclone Evacuation Centre) immediately adjacent to Nickol Bay Hospital. This is where more people and services are expected to locate to ensure safe refuge.

Please do not go to Nickol Bay Hospital during a Red Alert. Medical staff will only be available at the Karratha Leisureplex.

Port Hedland residents are advised that they can seek urgent medical attention at the Hedland Health Campus.

Residents can keep up to date with Tropical Cyclone forecasts by checking the BoM website.

Teen, 19, arrested over Warwick double murder

Police have released the names of the mother and daughter found dead in a Warwick

A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested and is being questioned by police over the murder of Maureen and Tamara Horstman in their Warwick home on Sunday afternoon.

Major Crime Squad detectives arrested the teenager at a Mirrabooka house.

Earlier, it was revealed the son and twin brother of two women found dead in their Warwick home has been ruled out as a suspect in the double murder after being questioned by police.

Tonight there are reports that the pair may have been murdered during a burglary gone wrong.

Seven News reported the mother and daughter may have been killed after confronting a burglar who had broken into the home on Sunday afternoon.

This evening, the 19-year-old man taken into custody by police was still being questioned and had not been charged.

The bodies of Tamara Alexandra Horstman, 26, and her mother Maureen Anne Horstman, 67, were found on Sunday afternoon after Tamara failed to arrive at work at Grand Cinemas Warwick.

Police arrived at the crime scene at about 2.30pm on Sunday. The parents of one of Miss Horstman's friends went to the Warwick address to check on her.

It was reported that around the same time Nicholas Horstman, the son and twin brother of the dead women, called triple zero. Mr Horstman bought the house with his mother and twin sister last year.

Police have not revealed how the women died, but it is believed Maureen suffered chest injuries and Tamara suffered head injuries.

The pair were found dead inside the Felgate Place home shortly after 2pm Sunday in separate rooms.

Mr Horstman was eliminated as a suspect and released after being questioned by homicide detectives.

Detective Superintendent Anthony Lee said being questioned by police did not indicate guilt or participation in the crime.

``When police take this action and it is reported a person is in police custody, the public should continue to provide information to police,'' he said.

Today, forensic police remain at the Felgate Place home, with items being seized from inside the double-storey house.

Tamara's Mazda3 car, which had been missing, was yesterday found in Mirrabooka, about 8km from where the bodies were found, after a member of the public heard via the media about the search and alerted police. Police had earlier yesterday issued a public plea for help over the whereabouts of the Mazda.

Police want to speak with anyone who saw the 2008 model sedan with the registration plate 1CZO 135 between 9am Sunday and midday on Monday. It was found parked on the corner of Teneriffe Place and Pampus Court in Mirrabooka.

Miss Horstman studied at Edith Cowan University after graduating dux of Prendiville Catholic College in 2004.

Her friends Teegan Dean and Rachel Hunter told Nine News last night they were still in disbelief over the double murder.

"It doesn't feel real," Miss Dean said.

Miss Hunter said Miss Horstman was "fun and crazy. She was the person you want to be with at a party."

'Slight improvements' for Schu

Michael Schumacher continues to fight for his life in a French hospital after a skiing accident.

SEVEN-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has undergone further surgery to relieve pressure on his brain as he continues to fight for his life after a skiing accident in the French Alps.

Doctors last night revealed they saw a "surgical window of opportunity" to carry out a second, two-hour operation to remove blood clots after a brain scan revealed a slight improvement in the 44-year-old's condition.

But the medical team say the retired motor ace remains in a "fragile" critical condition.

"The situation is more under control than yesterday but we cannot say that he is out of danger," head anaesthetician Jean-Francois Payen said at CHU Grenoble Hospital.

"We have won some time but we must continue an hour-by-hour surveillance."

Doctors were very pleased there had been no worsening of Schumacher's condition and he was showing "very slight" improvements, but they said they cannot say what will happen in coming days and the situation was still touch and go.

The second operation had its risks but the family gave their permission prior to the operation taking place at 10pm local time.

The F1 legend remained in an induced coma and in a state of hypothermia to give him the best chance to recover from the serious head trauma. Professor Emmanuel Gay, one of the specialists treating Schumacher said the German was not out of danger and he was still haemorrhaging in the brain.

Sky Sports Germany's Sandra Baumgartner says Michael Schumacher's accident has had a profound effect on his home country where he is viewed as a national hero.

IN PICTURES: SCHUMACHER'S LEGENDARY CAREER

"We cannot say that we have won because there are still some highs and some lows, but it's better than yesterday," he said. "He is still in a very critical condition, this has not changed. And we still cannot tell how he will be, which state he will be in when he does wake up. We cannot speculate on the future because once again it would be too early to do so."

Brain scans had shown intercranial haematoma (internal bleeding), cerebral contusions (brain tissue bruising) and oedema (fluid build up).

Further operations have not been ruled out but "strategies" would be considered over the next 48 hours.

"There are still many haematomas in the brain, with little bits everywhere," Professor Gay said. "That is what makes the situation critical and it needs to be looked at hour by hour, day by day. The situation can still evolve, but we won't be able to evacuate the other haematomas at the moment because they are not accessible. They are not as big as the one we removed yesterday."

The update on Schumacher's condition came amid revelations he may have been travelling up to 96km/h when he went between two marked ski runs and hit a rocky outcrop. Witnesses said the helmet he was wearing split in two and was full of blood.

Aerial images of the run clearly show the two ski runs with barely 50m between them. There is speculation Schumacher may have been travelling too fast to switch between the two runs and accidentally went off-piste.

Fans of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher have gathered outside the Grenoble hospital where he is being treated for serious brain trauma sustained in a skiing accident in the French Alps.

There has been huge global interest in the accident; more than 100 media were yesterday at the hospital waiting for word and broadcasting live updates around the world.

Schumacher, who turns 45 on Friday, was skiing with his 14-year-old son Mick when the accident happened just after 11am on Sunday.

Doctors said the helmet had given him a fighting chance but his head still suffered a very violent shock.

RISK-TAKER: LOVE OF SPEED HAUNTS SCHUMACHER

He was flown from the Meribel resort in the Trois Vallees ski area within eight minutes of the accident, before being transferred to the nearby city of Grenoble for specialist treatment.

Fans have gathered outside the hospital, including some who have made the more than four-hour drive from Germany to be close to their hero.

Schumacher's wife Corinna, his 16-year-old daughter Gina-Marie and son Mick remained at his bedside overnight.

Sky Sports Germany's Gernot Bauer confirms that Michael Schumacher remains in a critical but stable condition at a Grenoble hospital following his skiing accident.

"We would like to thank the medical team who we know do everything possible to help Michael," the Schumacher family said yesterday in a written statement.

"We would like to also thank the people from all around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for Michael's recovery."

MEDICOS say the next day or so will determine the future of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, including if emergency surgery has saved his life and or if he has suffered any long-term damage.

Schumacher is being watched around the clock by doctors and his family who have maintained a bedside vigilas he continues to fight for his life. following a skiing accident.

The 44-year-old German remains in an induced coma in a critical condition after he suffered internal bleeding and severe bruising to the brain when his head struck a rock during a high-speed off-piste ski run in the French Alps.

Doctors declined to say Schumacher was in a stable condition overnight, rather that he was still in a critical condition and being kept in a coma and in a state of hypothermia to give him the best chance to recover from the serious head trauma.

Professor Stephen Chabardes, the neurosurgeon who operated on the star, said all recommended treatments were being performed and he was being watched hour-by-hour. He said brain scans had shown intercranial haematoma (internal bleeding), cerebral contusions (brain tissue bruising and oedema (fluid build-up).

As the most successful driver in Formula 1 history, Michael Schumacher amassed seven World Championships and 91 race wins in 307 starts for Jordan, Benetton, Mercedes and most famously Ferrari.

FANS, RIVALS SHOW SUPPORT ON SOCIAL MEDIA

"We operated urgently to try to eliminate the (bleeding) haematoma and after the operation we saw that we had been able to eliminate these but also sadly the appearance of various bilateral lesions," he said.

Anaesthetist Jean-Francois Payen said: "We are working day and night at his bedside; it is too early to say anything as far as prognosis is concerned."

And neurologist Jean-Luc Truelle said it would take time for a better indication of the potential lasting damage.

The German, 45 on Friday, was skiing with son Mick, 14, off-piste when he fell and hit a rock, striking his head.

Doctors said Schumacher's helmet had given him a fighting chance but his head still suffered a very violent shock.

Witnesses, who called emergency services, confirmed he had been wearing a helmet but had been knocked unconscious and they saw blood coming from under the damaged helmet, marking the snow about him.

A Ferrari fan waits in front of the emergency department of the Grenoble hospital where Michael Schumacher is being treated for a severe head injury.

Paramedics flew to the Trois Vallees ski area within eight minutes of the accident and had him back to a local hospital before he was transferred to the nearby city of Grenoble for specialist treatment.

SIX OF THE BEST SCHUMACHER FORMULA 1 DRIVES

Outside the hospital, Schumacher's fans have gathered - including some who drove more than four hours from Germany to be close to their hero. There are also more than a dozen television live broadcast vans parked in front of the hospital, broadcasting the latest news around the world.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was shocked "along with millions of Germans" by the accident to the F1 legend."We listened to the doctors earlier as they described the situation as extraordinarily serious," her spokesman Steffen Seibert said. "We hope, along with Michael Schumacher and his family, that his injuries will heal and he will recover. We wish his wife, his children and the rest of his family strength and mutual support."

Schumacher who lives in Switzerland was on a private trip staying locally at his chalet when the accident happened at the Meribel ski resort.

In a bizarre incident, the Guardian has reported that a journalist dressed as a priest in an attempt to gain access to Schumacher's hospital room.

"I wouldn't have ever imagined something like this could happen," Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, was quoted as telling a journalist.

Michael Schumacher's friend and surgeon Professor Gerard Saillant at a press conference about the F1 legend's condition in Grenoble.

After the ruse was discovered the man was was purportedly escorted off the hospital's premises.

Schumacher is a towering figure in the motor industry and considered the greatest F1 driver ever. He retired from F1 for the final time in 2012 after a three-season comeback with Mercedes.

The race ace, who also drove for Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari, won the last of his world titles in 2004. He won two with Benetton, in 1994 and 1995, before moving to Ferrari and winning five in a row from 2000. The German has 91 career race wins.

Schumacher is considered the first ever self-made billionaire sports star.

No second chance for NYE louts

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Desember 2013 | 22.17

Assistant police commissioner Gary Dreibergs warns that drink-drivers and drunken louts will face the full force of the law tomorrow night. There will be no second chances, he said. Source: News Limited

AS MANY as 1000 extra police officers will be on the streets of WA tomorrow night, clamping down on anti-social behaviour.

Police warn there will be "no second chances" for people behaving violently on the last night of 2013.

Hundreds of thousands of West Australians are expected to head out for celebrations in major hot spots such as Fremantle, Northbridge, the coast and cities such as Bunbury, Mandurah and towns in the South-West.

Police have urged revellers to look out for each other, respect others and avoid drinking too much.

Where to go in Perth on New Year's Eve

Assistant Commissioner Gary Dreibergs said at a press conference today that extra police will be in Northbridge, Fremantle, Mandurah and Rockingham - and drink-driving will be a major focus.

"We want every member of the community to feel comfortable to celebrate safely without being impacted by the behaviour of others," he said.

"If everybody goes out there and has an enjoyable night and respects one another than we shouldn't have too many issues."

Mr Dreibergs said booze buses and mobile police units that can head to scenes quickly will be used.

He also pleaded for people to avoid getting involved in "silly scuffles."

"Don't be involved in things that can lead to bad repercussions," he said.

"We just want people to be very vigilant."

Parents should be aware of where their children are and revellers should be wary of "unlicensed taxis" - drivers who offer people lifts for money.

"We would like to have a big focus on parents knowing and being vigilant of the plans of their children, basically knowing where they are going to be on the night (and) we'd ask people not to get into unlicensed taxis,'' Mr Dreibergs said

"We want every member of the community to celebrate safely without being harassed or putting

up with unacceptable criminal behaviour and as such when required we will step in and take

action, swiftly and effectively - so if you break the law expect to face the consequences".

On New Year's Day, about 35,000 people are expected to attend the Perth Cup at Ascot Racecourse.

Schumacher 'critical' after ski accident

Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has sustained a head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps, Gavino Garay reports.

FORMULA One legend Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition in a French hospital with a brain haemorrhage after a skiing accident.

The 44-year-old German was "suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," the hospital in the southeast French city of Grenoble said in a statement.

"He remains in a critical condition.''

Schumacher had been skiing off-piste in the upmarket Meribel resort, where he reportedly has a property, when he fell and hit his head on a rock, mountain police who gave him first aid said.

Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm confirmed that Schumacher was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Airlifted... A helicopter is seen in front of the Grenoble hospital, in the French Alps, where former seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is being treated.

He was airlifted to a local hospital, then to the Grenoble facility. A specialist neurosurgeon from Paris was rushed in to oversee his treatment.

The director of the Meribel resort, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, had said just after the accident that Schumacher had been wearing a helmet and was "conscious but a little agitated'' just after the accident, with early reports suggesting there was no cause for alarm.

But when Schumacher then fell into coma, doctors realised the damage was worse than initially feared.

The two mountain police officers who gave first aid said Schumacher was suffering "severe cranial trauma'' when they got to him and a helicopter was brought in to evacuate him within 10 minutes.

Accident... Tourists watch Formula One world champion and then Ferrrari driver Michael Schumacher a during a skiing session in January 2004.

A renowned Paris surgeon, Dr Gerard Saillant - who also operated on Schumacher when he broke his calf and shinbone during his most serious racing crash at the 1999 British Grand Prix - was brought to the Grenoble hospital in a police car to take charge of the famous patient.

Schumacher was on a private stay in Meribel, according to his spokeswoman, with his 45th birthday happening next Friday.

Dr Gary Hartstein, former Medical Delegate for the Formula One World Championship, took to Twitter to attempt to explain the medical situation Schumacher finds himself in.

"It's quite well known that extradural hematomas, a kind of cerebral hemorrhage, can leave a lucid interval after injury," he wrote, referring to reports that Schumacher was conscious when he was attended to after the accident.

German Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher has been injured while skiing.

"Then as the hematoma forms, the sudden increase in pressure causes sudden and dramatic symptoms. Pressure must be relieved rapidly.

"This is done with a neurosurgical intervention. Then the victim is observed in an ICU environment.

"Quality of recovery depends on: 1) severity of initial injury, 2) acuteness and amplitude of pressure rise when hematoma forms, 3) rapidity with which it is drained, 4) quality of neuro intensive care and rehab."

Schumacher retired from Formula One for a second time at the end of the 2012 season. He won two world titles with Benetton and five in a row with Ferrari.

Schumacher has had accidents before, including a motorcycle crash in February 2009 in Cartagena, Spain, where he damaged a vertebra, a rib and the bottom of his skull.

At the time, his doctor, Johannes Peil, said it had caused the racer the most serious long-term harm of his career.

That accident denied him taking the place of Felipe Massa at Ferrari after the Brazilian suffered severe head injuries in a crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009.

Schumacher was seriously hurt in a motorcycling accident in February 2009 in Spain when he suffered neck and spine injuries.

He recovered from those injuries to make an ill-fated return in 2010 at Mercedes where he spent three seasons and was largely outshone by teammate Nico Rosberg.

THE parents of an Irish barman on life support after he was allegedly assaulted in Northbridge have flown into Perth to be at his bedside.

Thomas Keaney, 23, from County Galway, who worked at The Cure Tavern and Irish Bar on Francis St, Northbridge, has been in Royal Perth Hospital since the early hours of December 17 when i t's alleged he was punched once in the head and fell on to the road.

Mr Keaney's parents arrived in Perth on Friday, Galway pub owner Brendan Keogh told The Sunday Times last night.

"His mother was telling me that after the incident she was about to go out there and the next thing he improved," Mr Keogh said.

"She was speaking to him on the phone and she was very happy that he was fine. He said to her, 'Don't worry about me, I'm OK'.

"On Christmas Eve they got the news that something had happened and his condition had deteriorated."

Abbas Al Jarood, 22, of Girrawheen, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court yesterday charged with grievous bodily harm.

His lawyer, Ken Bates, said police had advised it was anticipated Mr Keaney's life support would be switched off and he would not survive.

If that occurred a post mortem would be conducted and the charge might be upgraded, Mr Bates added.

Bail was not applied for and Mr Al Jarood was remanded in custody to appear via video-link at Perth Magistrates Court on January 13.

Earlier this week, Mr Keaney's sister, Lauren, posted on Facebook: "I would like to thank everyone for all the love, support and prayers ye have sent to Thomas. He is a legend and we are so touched by all the kind words!!"

Cyclone intensifies off WA's north coast

A CATEGORY two tropical cyclone off WA's Kimberley coast is expected to bring destructive winds of more than 165km/h when it hits the Pilbara.

Tropical Cyclone Christine was off Broome early this morning and was forecast to bring heavy rainfall and gales of up to 100km/h south of Cape Leveque. It is expected to intensify further as it moves towards the Pilbara coast.

Tomorrow, the cyclone is forecast to peak as a category three, bringing gales and heavy rainfall to Karratha and possibly as far west as Exmouth.

Coastal communities between De Grey and Mardie, including Port Hedland and Karratha, have been warned of the potential for a dangerous storm tide late on Monday or early on Tuesday.

The Port Hedland Port Authority has evacuated ships from the inner and outer harbours.

The Bureau of Meteorology late last week issued a cyclone warning for coastal areas from Cape Leveque to Whim Creek, including Broome and Port Hedland.

Regions in northern WA are on high alert with a tropical cyclone threatening to make severe impact.

Christine, now a Catergory 2 storm, was 300km northwest of Broome and 470km north northeast of Port Headland early this morning.

"Gales with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are possible on the west Kimberley

coast south of Cape Leveque today. Heavy rainfall is expected today in coastal

areas of the west Kimberley and adjacent inland parts," the bureau warned.

"As the tropical cyclone begins to approach the Pilbara coast, gales are

expected to extend further west along the Pilbara coast to Whim Creek late

today or early on Monday.

"During Monday gales and heavy rainfall are expected to extend to Karratha and

possibly as far west as Exmouth, and then to the inland Pilbara late Monday and

on Tuesday. If Christine continues to develop as expected a severe tropical

cyclone impact on the Pilbara coast is likely late on Monday.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a blue alert for people in or near the coastal and inland communities of Dampier Peninsula to Onslow.

This includes people in Broome, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Whim Creek, Roebourne, Point Samson, Wickham, Karratha and Dampier and surrounding areas.

DFES has advised that 30 SES and VES volunteers from the Kimberley and Pilbara are on standby and the Gibb River Road is closed from Lennard River to Wyndham.

Flood warning

The storm has also prompted a flood warning and people in Kimberley and Pilbara communities are being urged to prepare for heavy rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology advises that a flood watch for the west Kimberley has been issued and heavy rainfall is possible about the north and west Kimberley over the weekend.

For the next 24 hours, widespread rainfall of 70mm to 80mm with isolated heavier falls are forecast for areas from Broome to Kalumburu.

Rainfall during the past few days and the forecast rainfall for next 24 hours in the West Kimberley may cause significant stream rises with areas of flooding.

The rain is likely to extend into the Pilbara on Monday and Tuesday.

Vow to sabotage shark drum lines

Baited drum lines to catch the biggest sharks will surround Perth's most popular beaches in January.

ANTI-CULL campaigners are threatening to sabotage the Barnett Government's controversial catch-and-kill shark policy - and say they're not afraid to break the law.

Western Australians for Shark Conservation has revealed it is preparing to take "direct action" when up to 72 drum lines are deployed next month, despite the possibility of hefty fines or jail terms.

And it is urging West Australians to "take out their boats" and interfere with the $1 million plan to keep beaches safe this summer.

Great white, tiger and bull sharks over 3m long will be shot and dumped at sea under the measure, which will run from January 10 to April 30.

The Department of Fisheries warned that anyone interfering could be fined $25,000 and jailed for 12 months.

Despite the threat, WASC and another group, Animal Rescue Team, say they have boats and divers ready to "neutralise" the lines.

"We won't stand for the culling of endangered sharks off the Western Australian coast," WASC president Ross Weir said. "We do have members of the public coming forward who are willing to intervene and that includes myself and our crew.

Mr Weir said some WASC members were prepared to break the law and he would make any volunteers aware of the repercussions.

Only fishermen contracted by the State Government will be allowed within a 50m exclusion zone around the drum lines.

But Mr Weir said: "You can only have so many water police in Perth and the water police can only chase so many boats at once, can't they?

"We will be asking the general public to take their boats and go out there if they believe strongly enough about it."

Animal Rescue Team spokeswoman Amy Lee said its members would take "non-violent direct action".

"The only thing I can say is that we won't be wrecking any equipment. If anything, we will be checking them and quite possibly taking the bait off them," she said.

Sea Shepherd Australia director Jeff Hansen said his organisation was investigating the legality of the baiting measures, which he described as "absolute insanity".

Opposition fisheries ¬spokes¬- man Dave Kelly, who plans to speak alongside WASC and Sea Shepherd at an anti-cull rally at Cottesloe Beach next Saturday, would not back direct action. "It's going to be a dangerous enough operation as it is," he said.

Fisheries Shark Response Unit spokesman Tony Cappelluti said laws apply for anyone who interferes with lawful fishing activity or with fish or gear.

Under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994, individuals caught interfering with fish or gear can be fined up to $25,000 and could face 12 months jail.

The Greens' Lynn MacLaren said she understood the frustration of activists, but would not condone direct action that broke the law.

Pollies' offices to cost further $3m

WA Premier Colin Barnett. Source: News Limited

TAXPAYERS are having to shell out an extra $3 million to refurbish offices for Barnett Government ministers, just 18 months after the same building underwent a $56 million facelift.

Dumas House in West Perth will undergo more work to accommodate two more ministers - Ken Baston and Bill Marmion. Other ministers are based there.

A spokeswoman for Premier Colin Barnett said the $3 million was money well spent and would be recouped in three years.

But the Opposition has described the expenditure as "outrageous", so soon after expensive refurbishments.

The $3 million, to be spent in 2014-15, was cited in the Government's recently released midyear financial projections statement.

Mr Barnett's spokeswoman said: "Two leases for offices currently occupied by ministers Baston and Marmion in London House and Allendale Square will expire in 2014, and will not be renewed.

"These two leases currently cost almost $1 million per year.

"The cost of fitout for the relocation of ministers at Dumas House will amount to approximately $3 million, meaning that the cost of this will be recouped in rent savings in just over three years.''

Government ministers previously in offices in St Georges Terrace were transferred to Dumas House in 2012.

Mr Barnett had the option of also moving to Dumas House, but instead built new offices for himself and his staff near Parliament House, at a further cost of $26 million.

Shadow treasurer Ben Wyatt said it was another example of extravagance and wrong priorities when the Government was taking the axe to projects such as light rail to bring debt under control.

"Colin Barnett always prioritises spending on himself and expects West Australians to cop cuts to frontline services to pay for it,'' he said.

Figures released in state parliament earlier this month showed that since November last year, security services for the Premier's offices at Hale House have cost taxpayers $555,023.

When utilities and gardening services are added, the bill rises to $720,660.

Australia takes 4-0 Ashes lead

A Chris Rogers century has led Australia to victory in the fourth Ashes Test, with one day and eight wickets to spare.

MICHAEL Clarke has primed Australia for a 5-0 whitewash in Sydney after another emphatic victory over England.

"We're going to have a go, that's for sure," Clarke said once Australia won the fourth Test at the MCG by eight wickets with a day and a half to spare thanks to a Chris Rogers century (116).

Click here to see a full scoreboard, ball-by-ball commentary, stats and FoxTracker in our Match Centre.

A series of dropped catches and obscure tactics from England skipper Alastair Cook on Day Four of the Fourth Test has raised questions over just how well he is coping with the pressure of leading an underperforming touring side in Australia.

Taking a 4-0 series lead lifts Australia from fifth to third on the world rankings, jumping Pakistan and England, which led the table just 16 months ago.

Only months after losing the Ashes series in England to go nine Tests in a row without a victory Australia now stands on the verge of history.

Just Ricky Ponting's 2006-07 champions and Warwick Armstrong's 1920-21 team have achieved a 5-0 clean sweep of the old enemy.

Clarke has been blown away by the remarkable turnaround in his team's fortunes.

"To be 4-0 up is hard to describe. It's an amazing feeling." he said.

Chris Rogers celebrates after reaching his century. Picture: Colleen Petch. Source: News Limited

"Our goal is to win 5-0 given the position we're in."

The only question now is which team Australia will take into the Sydney Test, which begins on Friday.

Coach Darren Lehmann confirmed that Ryan Harris (knee) and Shane Watson (groin) were both in doubt for Sydney. Harris has a five-day break with the match finishing more than a day early and him last bowled on Saturday.

There were opposing attitudes in the press conferences held by Alastair Cook and Michael Clarke, with the England captain conceding he could be replaced as leader for the final Ashes Test.

"At the end of the day he's a valuable bowler for us, so we won't take any risks. But again, if he's fit and he can get through and do a job for his captain he'll play," Lehmann said

Watson appeared largely untroubled on Sunday, scoring an unbeaten 83 but Lehmann claimed the all-rounder must be able to bowl in Sydney.

Given he is coming off a century in Perth there may be an argument that Watson could play as a batsman, with George Bailey making way for all-rounder James Faulkner and inform wicket-keeper Brad Haddin moving to number six.

Former Australian opener Phil Jaques says the assertive batting of Chris Rogers, Shane Watson and David Warner has been the key to reaching 1/143 at lunch on Day Four.

However Lehmann, who is also a selector, was firm on where he stood with Watson.

"He's an all-rounder who has to bowl," the coach said.

Doug Bollinger and Nathan Coulter-Nile remain on standby for Harris.

If Australia does end up picking the same team again for the fifth Test in a row it will be the first time in a series since the 1989 Ashes, another imposing and unexpected success story.

Sunday was just the fourth time that Australia has successfully chased more than 200 batting last at the MCG and the first time in 53 years.

Chris Rogers has described his century which helped Australia to a 4-0 Ashes series lead as what dreams are made of.

Clarke claimed victory in this Test had an extra dimension because Australia was well behind on the first innings and at one stage England was 116 ahead with all 10 second innings wickets in hand.

"For the first time in this series we found ourselves behind in the game and over the last couple of days we've been able to turn that around and win convincingly today so I think the boys deserve a lot of credit," said Clarke.

After playing to near-full houses around the country more than 38,000 turned up at the MCG on Sunday, taking the four-day total to almost 272,000.

Disease warning for Bali travellers

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Desember 2013 | 22.16

The Aedes Albopictus mosquito which transmits the Chikungunya virus. Source: AFP

WEST Australians have been given yet another reason to be cautious about travel to Bali amid a dramatic increase in cases of a mosquito-borne tropical disease there.

The latest Health Department data shows 51 reports of chikungunya virus have been made in WA since the start of the year - the most on record for the illness, which can leave victims with aching joints and inflammation for months.

A department alert said the spike was "wholly attributable" to an increase in cases from people who had been to Bali.

"The vast majority of cases (92 per cent) reported recent travel to Indonesia, and among these, 94 per cent had been to Bali," the alert said.

"The remaining four chikungunya cases in 2013 acquired their infections in Papua New Guinea, Singapore and an unspecified location in South-East Asia."

Just 31 cases of chikungunya virus were reported by West Australians between 2008 and 2012, an average of six per year.

Australian Medical Association WA vice-president Michael Gannon said it was important West Australians took appropriate precautions when travelling to Indonesia.

"People travelling to Bali do need to think about it differently to how they would travel within their own state and within their own country and they need to really take those extra precautions," he said.

"The attitude of many West Australians when they go to Bali is that it's no different to going to Busselton or Mandurah, but it's a much more dangerous place and one of the things that makes it more dangerous is tropical diseases."

Similar to Ross River virus, symptoms of chikungunya virus during its acute phase, which typically lasts several days, include a fever, rash, headaches, nausea, vomiting and conjunctivitis.

He said West Australians travelling to Bali should ensure their vaccinations were up-to-date and be meticulous about handwashing.

"Use appropriate insect repellents, wear appropriate clothing and think twice before you travel to places where you are at greater risks," he said.

TC Christine intensifies off WA's north coast

WA'S north is preparing for Tropical Cyclone Christine, after a tropical low intensified to cyclone strength late this evening.

The category one cyclone was named this evening today after wind gusts near the centre of the system intensified as predicted to 100km/h.

The weather system, which for the moment remains well off the WA coast, is expected heavy rain across coastal areas of the Kimberley and Pilbara in coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a cyclone warning for coastal areas from Cape Leveque to Whim Creek, including Broome and Port Hedland.

A cyclone watch is current for coastal areas from Whim Creek to Exmouth, including Karratha and Onslow, and extending inland to Paraburdoo.

At 6pm, the weather system was estimated to be 310km north-north-west of Broome and

570km north-north-east of Port Hedland, and moving 12km/h parallel to the coast.

Gales with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour may develop on the west Kimberley coast between Cape Leveque and Broome during today.

Heavy rainfall is expected today and Sunday in coastal areas of the west Kimberley.

As the system begins to approach the Pilbara coast later on Sunday gales are expected to extend further west to Whim Creek, including Port Hedland.

DFES has advised that 30 SES and VES volunteers from the Kimberley and Pilbara are on standbyand the Gibb River Road is closed from Lennard River to Wyndham.

Gen Demountable at primary school

Demountable classrooms such as these will be in two-thirds of primary schools next year. Source: News Limited

AN extra 114 transportable classrooms will be used to teach primary school students in 2014 - meaning two-thirds of public primary schools are now using them.

More than 400 of the state's 606 public primary schools will use demountable buildings next year, prompting concern WA students are becoming a "demountable generation".

An Education Department report to Parliament, in response to Opposition questions, shows an increase of 114 transportables, up from 1388 this year.

WA Primary Principals Association president Steve Breen described the situation as unacceptable. He pointed out that private school students were not educated in demountable classrooms.

"This is the question that needs to be answered - why do government schools have demountables and non-government schools don't have demountables?" he said.

"I don't think it's acceptable. If we are going to provide a first-class education system, we have to provide a first-class environment for students and teachers and support staff to work.

"Some of the schools in the northern suburbs and the southern belt and out past Ellenbrook, they have got some real problems.

"There needs to be greater co-ordination between government bodies. With these influxes (in student numbers), I think the Government knows where the students are going to go - they should be able to plan for those."

Shadow treasurer Ben Wyatt said the Government had "not done the basics in ensuring schools have the facilities to keep up with the state's booming population".

"Under Colin Barnett, WA kids are becoming a demountable generation," he said.

"Mr Barnett is happy to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on luxuries like Elizabeth Quay, while cutting essentials like school classrooms to pay for it. It will get worse because Mr Barnett has grossly underfunded the cost of moving Year 7 students into high schools."

Education Minister Peter Collier said transportable classrooms, had been used for decades in the public system.

Mr Collier said WA's growing population had "put some strain on the Education Department", but that pressure on primary schools would be eased in 2015 when Year 7s move into high schools.

He said that 29 secondary schools would also be upgraded "to ensure they can meet the demands of a growing school population".

Next year, Meadow Springs Primary School will have 23 transportable classrooms, followed by Makybe Rise Primary School with 22, Bletchley Park Primary School with 20, and Willetton Senior High School with 19.

Within public secondary schools, there will be 335 transportable classrooms in 2014 and 435 in 2015, up from 326 this year.

Two-day Rotto swim on cards

Competitors hit the water for the 2013 Rottnest Channel Swim. Source: Supplied

PERTH'S Rottnest Channel Swim is set for a major overhaul, after a record number of applicants were turned away from the 2014 event.

The world's largest open water swim will get bigger under a plan to split it over two days or two concurrent races.

Rottnest Channel Swim Association president David Corney said a second starting line, in addition to the traditional Cottesloe Beach starting point, was the most favoured option.

The number of competitors who can take part in the 19.7km HBF Rottnest Channel Swim each year is determined by how many solo swimmers enter the race.

This year 274 are competing.

Each team or swimmer must be accompanied by a support crew boat and there is a cap on the number of boats allowed during the race.

Every solo competitor who registers is guaranteed a spot, while team and duo positions are determined by a ballot.

This year there was a 17 per cent increase in the number of solo entries (from 234 to 274), leaving just 157 duo places and 405 team places.

Organisers also received a record number of duo and team registrations. From the ballot, 27 per cent of applicants had to be declined, he said.

"That's the highest number ever," Mr Corney said.

"It's a good problem to have but it's a problem we are acutely sensitive to because we know the attraction of the event and it disappoints a lot of swimmers."

He said the association was considering a number of options with a decision to be made before April.

Running the event on Saturday and Sunday from 2015 - the event's 25th anniversary holding it on two consecutive Saturdays and twin starting and finishing lines were options being considered.

"Instead of having it all at Cottesloe, we would leave from elsewhere as well as Cottesloe and then have two finish lines," he said.

He said swimmers would be consulted before a final decision was made.

Mr Corney said preparations were "going well" for the February 22 event and he did not expect any negative impacts from the State Government's plan to install drum lines to catch sharks.

"We're always concerned (about sharks) but we don't see that as the highest risk of the event; we see boat safety as a far higher issue," he said

Floreat, City Beach and Leighton Beach were closed yesterday after shark sightings.

Jobless Kiwis flocking to Australia

JOBLESS Kiwis are flocking to Australia in search of work - and demanding the dole.

New Zealand migration to Australia has soared 40 per cent during the global financial crisis, as tens of thousands of South Pacific and Asian migrants use New Zealand as a back door to duck Australia's tough migration controls.

But Australia's welfare crackdown is forcing jobless Kiwi migrants to sardine into share houses with friends and extended family on the fringes of major cities.

Anglicare wants the federal government to lift its ban on unemployment and sickness benefits to recent New Zealand migrants.

Salome Swan, of Anglicare Southern Queensland, said jobless families were surviving on meagre Family Tax Benefit payments.

>>MIGRATION TRIBUNAL CASE LOAD INCREASES

<<MORE VISA OVERSTAYERS THAN ASYLUM SEEKERS

<<THE KIWI CAME FROM AN AUSTRALIAN ANCESTOR

Some Kiwi migrant families had 24 people sharing a single house, with just one person working.

"It's getting worse,'' Ms Swan said yesterday.

"There are lots of overcrowded houses with two or three families and lots of kids staying in one house.

"I've seen families just living on the family allowance, and the eldest child at high school is working at McDonalds to support them.''

New Zealand has now lost 12 per cent of its population to Australia, as Kiwis search for work and higher pay across the Tasman.

New Zealanders with a clean criminal record can live indefinitely in Australia on a "444 visa", which is granted automatically when they arrive.

But the 444 visa locks them out of the welfare benefits paid to citizens and "permanent residents'' - even if they have worked and paid taxes in Australia.

New Zealanders who have arrived in Australia since 2001 must wait 10 years to apply for the dole - which is cut off after six months - and their children cannot access the HECS loans scheme to attend university.

But they can receive a Disability Support Pension and Family Tax Benefits.

Ms Swan said it was unfair that New Zealanders had to pay tax while working here, but could not access full welfare benefits if they became sick or lost their job.

"If they find work it's fine, but it's lucky if they find work,'' she said.

"There are a lot more Samoans coming through - lots of Islanders have come from New Zealand and they can have more difficulties because of their poor language skills.''

Ms Swan said New Zealand-born high school students were not going to university because they could not afford the fees.

"The children who were brought up here don't want to go back (to New Zealand) and that means a lot of them end up homeless, or just hanging around and couch-surfing,'' she said.

Demographer Bob Birrell, of Monash University's Centre for Population and Urban Research, yesterday called for more controls on open-ended Kiwi migration.

"To allow this uncontrolled flow of New Zealanders when we've got far too many young people looking for entry level jobs is irresponsible,'' he said.

"The wage levels here are 10 to 20 per cent higher here.''

Immigration data reveals that 648,200 New Zealand citizens are living in Australia - up from 470,000 in 2007, before the start of the global financial crisis.

Nearly 85,000 Kiwi citizens were born outside New Zealand - meaning one in every eight of the migrants gained New Zealand citizenship before switching to Australia.

The statistics show that 10,592 New Zealanders were born in Samoa, 5269 in the Cook Islands and 2754 in Fiji.

Another 14,744 Kiwi citizens were born in Asia, 5842 in Africa and 2116 in the Middle East.

About 64,000 Australian citizens are living in New Zealand.

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully urged New Zealanders to be aware of their welfare rights before moving to Australia.

"New Zealanders planning to move to Australia need to make sure they are aware of their rights and entitlements and make sure they have back-up if things do not go to plan,'' he said in a statement issued to News Corp Australia.

Pompous Piers cops it from Lee

CNN talk show host Piers Morgan has faced up to an over from Brett Lee, and the results werent pretty.

IT wasn't the fields or the beaches on which his beloved Winston Churchill urged the fight, but Piers Morgan can at least say he never surrendered.

Facing "overwhelming odds" - and Brett Lee bowling in excess of 130km/h - the outspoken former Fleet Street editor turned CNN talkshow host put his arm, ribs, back and just about every part of his body where his mouth has been for weeks.

Morgan, who told his 3.8 million Twitter followers how soft his beloved English cricket team had become, recently urged the batsmen to "grow a pair" and that he'd "love" to face Aussie speedster Mitchell Johnson.

Never one to back down from a challenge, that escalated into a brief - albeit very painful - net session against Lee at the MCG on Friday, with at least 2000 baying Aussie fans, including Johnson and Peter Siddle, looking on.

Morgan was sat on his rump, bowled and struck three times in one fiery over in which Lee extended himself to "about 85 per cent" capacity.

Lee said he'd done a "public service" by inflicting a bit of pain.

"He got hurt but he didn't get maimed, so that's a positive step," the former Aussie paceman said.

"You have to give full credit to the guy - he's going to be really sore tomorrow.

"He has a serious, serious bad lump on his wrist, he got a couple (in the) ribs, one on the back - that noise it made was a sickening blow.

"But he kept on going, so you have to take your hat off to the guy.

"The biggest smile around the ground was from Mitchell Johnson I think. I looked over at Mitch and he gave me a wink, he was quite chuffed."

Lee later tweeted a picture of what appeared to be Morgan's arm complete with a nasty bruise.

Morgan joked he felt "like Brian Close in 1976" after the West Indies left him bruised and battered, but said it hadn't changed his opinion about the English batsmen.

"No. It's made me reassess what you need out here on an Ashes tour and that is courage, fortitude and a Churchillian spirit of never giving in despite overwhelming odds," he said.

"It was quite intimidating - a big crowd and the Aussies all came out to watch a proper Pom with a bit of guts to him and I think they were all quite impressed.

"I think Johnson was pleased he wasn't bowling at me.

"I came to do a job - I knew I wouldn't hit him, particularly, but I thought if I could just survive an over, I'd make a point on behalf of all the England fans who'd paid to be here, which is you just have to show a bit of stiff upper lip."

Morgan said West Indian stars Viv Richards and Chris Gayle had advised him to advance down the pitch to upset Lee's length.

"Unfortunately, despite (Lee's) nice-guy image, he's a very nasty piece of work," Morgan said afterwards having been iced for growing bruises.

"But he saw me coming, he loved the crowd and he speared it straight into my guts, my hands and everything - a deliberate attempt to maim me.

"And that's despite his own mother telling him this morning not to hurt this guy, whoever he is.

"But my central point was not to score big runs, but to survive the over intact and as you may have seen by the way I was beckoning him like Rocky Balboa, the faster he bowled, the harder he hit me, the more I told him to crank it up.

"That's what I call British spirit and that's what I want to see from the England team going forward.

"I hope (England coach) Andy Flower is watching, because I showed more guts in that 10-minute session than his team have shown in four Test matches.

"So I'm ready, ready for the call."

On Twitter, his efforts won some praise from Chris Gayle.

Morgan is a cricket tragic, who is always keen to let his feelings be known on Twitter, especially during Test matches.

It was on the social media site that today's novelty contest was allegedly born, after Morgan unleashed on Alistair Cook when he lost his wicket in Adelaide.

Morgan slammed the England captain's "reckless stupidity" and called him "pathetic". The former village cricketer later claimed he would relish facing Aussie paceman Mitchell Johnson and that England's batsmen needed to "grow a pair".

Professional courtesy led to Lee firing back at Morgan, wondering how he would cope facing the sort of deliveries Johnson was unleashing and offering to let him find out in the MCG nets.

Morgan replied: "Game on".

Chris Rogers and Steve Smith have embarked on a rebuilding mission after Australia lost three early wickets in their first innings at the MCG.

Dave Warner and Shane Watson are both dismissed before lunch, after Mitchell Johnson earlier helped bowl England out for 255 on day two at the MCG.

Unsurprisingly, there was plenty of Twitter trash talk ahead of today's showdown.

Morgan posted footage of himself getting in the ring with boxer Manny Pacquiao as well as a link to Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar hitting Lee for three boundaries in an over in 2008.

Lee replied that it was likely to more resemble footage of him smashing Tendulkar on the helmet with a bouncer.

Other cricketers and sporting stars were quick to join in, including former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, who received a sharp retort from Morgan.

To add to the showmanship, Morgan even claimed he had to sign a personal indemnity form sent by Channel 9.

SHARK PLAN: Baited beaches will cost $1m

There has been widespread criticism of the Government's plan to kill sharks that come close to shore.

THE WA Government's controversial new catch and kill shark policy is likely to cost taxpayers around $1 million this summer.

Premier Colin Barnett today revealed the estimated figure as the locations of the 72 baited hooks which will be used to lure sharks was announced today.

From January 10, WA Fisheries will deploy baited drum lines along five locations in the Perth metropolitan area - Ocean Reef/Mullaloo, Trigg/Scarborough, Floreat/City Beach, Cottesloe/North Cottesloe and Port Leighton - and off three beaches in the state's South West - Old Dunsborough, Meelup/Castle Rock and Gracetown - where the most recent fatality occurred.

The announcement comes as the Government put out its tender for professional fisherman to "humanely" destroy sharks caught by the drum lines.

Today Mr Barnett and new WA Fisheries Minister Ken Baston confirmed sharks caught by the drum lines that had not already died would be shot by firearm and discarded at sea.

The WA Government today revealed the metropolitan and South West beaches which will be drum-line baited for large sharks.

They also said anyone who tried to sabotage baited drum lines by either stealing the bait, hooks or interfere with contracted commercial fisherman would face a $20,000 fine.

Commercial fisherman will monitor the drum lines for 12 hours a day, seven days a week. They will then rebait the hooks overnight, it was also revealed today.

The WA Government has copped harsh criticism from conservationists over its controversial new plan, despite similar measures already in operation in New South Wales and Queensland.

A report by Bond University for WA Fisheries in 2005 explicitly recommended against using baited drum lines or shark nets in WA because of the risk to other marine life as well as the cost.

Premier Colin Barnett holding a hook which is part of the baited drum line that will be used to catch and kill large sharks as part of the WA Government's control policy.

When asked by PerthNow if the Department of Fisheries and its scientists supported the new measures, regional manager Tony Cappelluti, replied: "This is a government policy and we support the policy and we are going to play a very big role, we are determined to make sure it works."

Mr Barnett also made it clear the catch and kill policy was a government decision, not WA Fisheries.

"This is a policy decision of government and Fisheries have the responsibility of implementing it," he said.

"I understand that particularly in the research community that people do not support the killing of sharks but we have to face as a government a balance of the issue.

Popular Scarborough Beach will be among a selection of metropolitan beaches which will be drumline baited.

"Seven fatalities in three years says to me and my cabinet colleagues is that we must act. And it's no different than what happens in NSW and QLD. The way this is being done in WA, it has been designed to only catch the large sharks which are likely to be a threat."

And while Mr Barnett could not reveal whether the contracted fisherman would be given a quota, he said the public would be updated on the number and types of sharks caught over the summer.

On Tuesday, the WA government called for professional shark fishermen to apply to patrol the state's waters and kill any shark bigger than three metres spotted in the designated zones.

After the death of surfer Chris Boyd in Gracetown last month, Mr Barnett said the WA government "had to intervene more directly".

The death of Gracetown surfer Chris Boyd has triggered the state Government's shark strategy.

Authorities probe roof death

Authorities are investigating if electricity played a part in the death of a man in his 70s in the roof of a Ledge Point home this morning. Picture: File image Source: News Limited

AUTHORITIES are investigating if electricity played a part in the death of a man in his 70s in the roof of a Ledge Point home this morning.

EnergySafety and Western Power inspectors are assisting police to investigate the death and have indicated at this stage it is unclear if electricity was involved.

The man was believed to have been in his own roof space when he died.

EnergySafety thoroughly investigates electricity and gas related incidents in WA, with a view to preventing them in the future.

EnergySafety acting executive director Michael Bunko gave his sincere condolences to the man's family.

"Although it is still unclear how this man died, I take the opportunity to remind people of the lethal electrical dangers when working in roof spaces and the importance of turning off the electricity main switch at the main switchboard before venturing up into the roof space," Mr Bunko said.

Man killed by lightning strike on Fraser Coast

A YOUNG boy survived a freak lightning strike which killed a man on a beach near Fraser Island Friday night.

The pair was on the beach at Inskip Point between Beagle and Sarawak camping grounds, two popular tourists destinations, when the lightning struck the man about 6.15pm.

It's believed they were among a group of people on the Fraser Coast beach when the lightning hit.

The man died on the beach while the young boy was not seriously injured.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the boy was alert and conscious when he was taken to Gympie hospital as a precaution.

Manager at the Rainbow Beach Holiday Village Annette Cochrane, 50, said thousands of tourists were at Inskip Point when the lightning struck.

"There are about 3000 people out there at the moment, it is absolutely packed. Rainbow Beach is packed these holidays," she said.

The national park area, which is at the northern tip of Rainbow Beach and is where the ferry barge to Fraser Island is located, is a popular destination for camping.

Last night, a quick but powerful storm hit the area.

"We did have a lot of lightning and at one stage the doors were rattling with thunder," Ms Cochrane said.

"The sky was really black, then we got the thunder and lightning and it was very muggy."

"It didn't last long but it must have been pretty bad out there on the beach," she said.

Ms Cochrane has lived in Rainbow Beach for 16 years and never heard of a fatal lightning strike in the area before.

"It is shocking, it's terrible."

Ashleigh Hunter, from the Rainbow Beach Hotel, said locals and tourists were shocked by the news.

"Everyone is really sad and shocked and pretty upset," she said.

"We heard the strike and then the ambulance went past and we heard one of the customers say that there was a man fishing (when he was struck by lightning)..."

Inskip Point is about 250km north of Brisbane.

The storm came as Queensland's southeast was being warned of extreme weather over the weekend.

AN injured 70-year-old lone sailor has been picked up by a Lancelin Sea Rescue vessel and brought to shore.

The sailor activated his EPIRB about 9.30am today off the coast about 100km north of Perth.

The rescued man is 70-year-old sailor Terry Renton, who told Ten News he was hit by the boom on his yacht yesterday.

It is understood the sailor has a back injury and set off his EPIRB when he realised he was unable to continue to sail his boat.

Mr Renton said he launched the EPIRB when he could not get any help through his two-way radios.

The RAC Rescue chopper was also called in to assist the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) search for Mr Renton.

He was found about six nautical miles (11km) off the coast of Ledge Point, 120km north of Perth.

Mr Renton has been transported back to Lancelin by sea and a Lancelin Volunteer Sea Rescue vessel is towing his unmanned yacht.

It is believed the man will be assessed by a medical team once he has been brought ashore and could be transferred to hospital depending on the severity of his injury.
